Confessions of a Lady Baker, part 2

I present to you my Jeep Cake! I totally underestimated how long this creation would take me to finish. In my previous post I mentioned how my Cali friend recommended that I cut and fill the cake before calling it a night, but I was a baby about it and went to bed because I was exhausted. I thought 8 hours would be sufficient to finish the cake the next day. My Cali friend said, "you think so?" "Of course," I said confidently, though inside I was questioning myself.
The next morning I struggled to wake up like I usually do every day of my life. My self imposed deadline was for 5:30pm so that I could have enough time to shower and get all dolled up for the party. 6 o'clock rolled around and I was still not finished and this is when the most amazing person came to my aid...mi madre. She finished the roof and she put together the wheels for me! Sigh...I am so lucky to have such an awesome mother.
So lesson learned...definitely not going to procrastinate any cake orders anymore and I will listen to my Cali friend next time.
I am ready for my next challenge!!

Confessions of a Lady Baker

A little over a year ago I signed up for cake decorating classes at Michael's. I was feeling kind of blue and the way I bounce from things is by adding on something to my schedule, so I have less time to think and wallow. I figured it'd be a great thing to do since I love cooking and it could enhance the wifey/mommy resume. My primary reason for signing up for the class was because I wanted to make my kids' birthday cakes in the future :)

A year has gone by...and I am still single and blue lol. But I never imagined that this hobby would become one of my passions in life. After four intense months of cake decorating classes I started my business, Dololicious Cakes. At first it started with my boss asking me to make birthday cakes for the monthly office birthday parties. More co-workers started ordering cakes for their own personal parties and little by little my business has grown. I was fortunate enough to make a wedding cake and partake in a wedding showcase. So far my advertisement has been by word of mouth, a humble picture album I have started on Facebook, and my business cards. Hopefully in the next couple of months I will have a website and a logo. So stay tuned in!

I am not sure if I will ever open up my own bakery. I'd love to though. I always think about how it will look, how it would be decorated. What I would serve. I really let my mind go wild when I think of my bakery. Unfortunately, you need a lot of money to open up a business. So maybe when my good friend from Cali moves to Miami her and I will become business partners. She truly has an amazing talent when it comes to baking and decorating cakes. So watch out Charm City Cakes, because Tia Maria and Dolo's creations will kick your ass :p

I am currently working on a Jeep shaped cake for a friend's birthday. This will definitely be a challenge for me. Although the 300 person wedding cake I made was quite a feat...I have never carved a cake :/ I have been thinking about how I am going to do this cake, how I am going to decorate it, and how I will present it for about a month now. And this week I have just been procrastinating. I did the same thing in college. When I had a big exam coming up I'd spend two weeks thinking about the test and what I had to study. How I was going to study but when it came to a few days before the exam, I could not get myself to start studying. I am assuming this behavior is due to fear of failing. I should have baked the cake last night, but I waited till tonight. I was thinking that I'd come home from work and get right to it. Once I got home I decided it was more important to eat dinner with my mom, watch some tv with her which led me to falling asleep on the couch.

Well the cakes are baked and are currently cooling. My Cali girl tells me I should level and fill my cakes, but I am too tired. I am sorry to disappoint you love. I shall wake up wicked early tomorrow.

Soulmates

Somewhere there waiteth in this world of ours

For one lone soul, another lonely soul-

Each chasing each through all the weary hours,

And meeting strangely at one sudden goal;

Then blend they- like green leaves with golden flowers,

Into one beautiful and perfect whole-

And life's long night is ended, and the way

Lied open onward to eternal day.

- Sir Edwin Arnold

This is the preface to a book I am currently reading, "Why Him? Why Her?" by Helen Fisher. I absolutely loved it and felt I needed to share.

I also recommend the book. I have enjoyed it thus far. Helen is an anthropologist who does research on love, relationships and personalities. She teamed up with the creators of Match.com and developed the sister site Chemistry.com. Helen has devised four personality types: the Explorer, the Builder, the Director and the Negotiator. These personality types are based on biology, one's genetic component. They don't take into consideration your temperament or character. The Explorer seeks novelty, is creative and spontaneous. The Builder is calm, social, cautious, loyal and orderly. The Director is tough minded, analytical and focused. The Negotiator is intuitive, nurturing, altruistic and emotionally expressive. (These are all just brief summaries)

Her theory is that based on your personality type you search for a specific significant other. For example, Negotiators and Directors match up, Explorers seek other Explorers and Builders tend to gravitate towards each other. So this book is all about understanding your personality type in order to find true love.

The book includes the personality test Helen created so you can know what are your two dominant personalities. We all have a bit of the four but we have two primary ones. If you are interested in taking the test let me know and I will get you a copy.
